Vandals cause up to $10,000 in damage at Sun Valley Elementary
Vandals painted graffiti on all buildings and portable classrooms and broke windows with rocks Wednesday night at Sun Valley Elementary School, causing damage estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
“We don’t know who’s responsible, but … given the extensiveness of the damage and the time it would have taken to do that, my suspicion is that it was more than one person,” spokesman Steve Mulvenon said Friday.
The school is in recess until Dec. 1, but students and teachers going to a writers workshop discovered the damage Thursday morning.
“School police monitor and patrol the schools, but they have very limited officers and 92 schools,” Mulvenon said. “So, there’s not a security presence at all the schools 24/7. There’s just not enough resources to do that.”
Secret Witness, 322-4900, is offering $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of suspects.
“If we can determine who was responsible, we’ll seek financial restitution from them,” Mulvenon said. “It’s not fair that the taxpayers should be on the hook for this.”
