Teachers praise faculty
Reed High School staff and students welcomed new first-year teachers this fall.
“So far, so good,” said Shannon Devereaux, a first-year English teacher.
Yadira Loza, 27, began teaching two classes, human growth and development and nutrition at Reed last month.
“I like the teaching, but not so much the grading and all the documentation that comes with teaching,” Loza said.
Loza said she teaches students in various ways.
“I try to mix it up. Doing lecture for a few minutes, then moving on to book work and then doing a group activity, because the class is so long, they’re here for 73 minutes, I can’t just do one thing.”
Devereaux said teaching at Reed has “been a blessing.”
“I have so much support, great mentors, great staff,” Devereaux said.
Education is a community effort, she said.
“I think educating everyone takes everyone … it really takes a team effort,” Devereaux said.
