Schools get grants for reading initiatives

By Cyndi Loza

Some Reno elementary schools received a grant last week to help their students get a leg up on reading.

City National Bank officials said last week that it has awarded 11 “Reading is the Way Up” grants totaling $5,500 to support literacy-based projects in K-12 Nevada schools. In the Reno area, High Desert Montessori School and Sierra Vista Elementary School will each receive $500 for its reading initiatives.

High Desert Montessori School will use its money for the school’s “Buddy Reading” project. The program aims to pair students struggling with reading with more advanced readers.

Sierra Vista Elementary’s “Morning Reading” program provides additional tutoring for students prior to class every morning.

The grant money they receive will go toward funding that program.
