School Assembly: News from schools in Washoe County

Groundbreaking

Incline Village Elementary will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday for its new 28,000-square-foot building. The building is being designed by Collaborative Design Studio, and the contractor is Trammel Crow Co. Construction Services. The $9,465,000 facility is scheduled to be completed in the fall.

Comfort kits

Diedrichsen Elementary School students will finish off their monthlong project of creating kits for foster children this week.

A Diedrichsen fifth-grade class will drop off their comfort kits, filled with various items such as toothbrushes, toothpastes, brushes, combs, puzzles and coloring books, at Washoe County Social Services this week. Fifth-grade teacher Carrie Stimpson said the project is aimed at helping foster children cope while in foster care.

If you’d like to donate items for the kits, please drop them off at the school, 1735 Del Rosa Way in Sparks.

Honorable mentions

People who have distinguished themselves recently in education.

Science teachers Susan Kaiser of McQueen High School and Sylvia Scoggin of Pine Middle School were named Sandra A. Daugherty Foundation Outstanding Science Teachers.

Kaiser and Scoggin are the first recipients of the award and will be honored at their schools. Scoggin will be recognized today at Pine, and Kaiser will be recognized Thursday at McQueen.

Each teacher will receive a $1,500 cash award, $1,500 for their school’s science department, and a $500 college scholarship will be donated to a student of each teacher’s choice.

The award is named after the late Dr. Sandra A. Daughtery, a former faculty member of the University of Nevada, Reno’s School of Medicine. Daugherty was a physician, clinical researcher and epidemiologist, earning a national reputation for her work in hypertension, chronic fatigue syndrome and woman’s health issues.

The family foundation created in 2001 supports the development of clinical research and education in cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention. It also recognizes and rewards excellence in science and medical teaching.

  • Damonte Ranch High School student America Acevedo was recognized for receiving the Class Act Award through KRNV Channel 4 at the Washoe County School District board meeting on Tuesday. The award honors a student who has shown exceptional work in the community and in the school district.
  • Vaughn Middle School teacher Jennifer Hoy was recognized for receiving the Excellence in Education Award through KRNV Channel 4 at the Washoe County School District board meeting on Tuesday. The award honors a Washoe County teacher who has shown exceptional work in education.
  • Dawn Frolich was presented the Exceptional Volunteer Award at the Washoe County School District board meeting on Tuesday. The award recognizes a volunteer in the school district who has donated at least 100 hours of unpaid work for the success of all school children.
  • Linda Enos was presented the Substitute Recognition Award at the Washoe County School District board meeting on Tuesday. The award recognizes exceptional substitute teachers in the school district.
