Middle-School Career Days

The Education Collaborative will end their two-week long event today that paired Reno middle-school students with local businesses for firsthand experience on various careers available after high school.

The organization worked with local middle schools and businesses for the Career Exploration Days, CED, which began April 17. About

500 eighth-graders from 10 area middle schools participated in the three-hour workshop that helped students become familiar with various careers, technologies, organizational structures, skill demands and working environments.

They’re heading to high school next year,” said Judie Elliott, CED coordinator. “They need to know what classes to take and, if they want to go into medicine (for example), they have to buckle down and get good grades.”

Businesses that participated in CED included: Academy for Career Education, Carpenters JATC, Charter Communications, City of Reno, Clearstar Financial Credit Union, Incline Village General Improvement District, KRNV Channel 4, Nevada Humane Society, Nevada Job Connect, Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy, Northern Nevada Medical Center, Reno Regional Emergency Communications Center, Regional Transportation Commission Ride, Sheet Metal Workers, Sierra Pacific Power Co., SNCAT Media Center, Truckee Meadows Community College Fire Academy, and the Regional Technical Institute Culinary Arts Program.

Servant Warriors

Excel Christian School students will take on a variety of projects Thursday to give back to the community.

About 75 students in grades K-12 will team up to work on different tasks in Sparks and Reno for the third annual Servant Warrior Around Town. The students and staff will help out in various locations completing projects that include cleaning up trash at the Sparks Marina and packing food boxes at the Salvation Army Warehouse, among other activities.

The Sparks school aims to illustrate the importance of being responsible community contributors through the event.

Renown Career Day

Reno middle-school students received a firsthand look at a career in medicine.

About 40 Traner Middle School students participated in Renown Regional Medical Center’s hospital career day on Friday.

Through the event, students learned about nursing in the hospital setting and saw firsthand what skills were needed to pursue the profession.

Short tours of the hospital’s campus were also offered. Students were able to visit career booths and received information on what other careers the health industry offered.

Steaks & Stars: Mamie Towles Elementary School is $10,000 closer to meeting the schools technology needs, said Tamala Green, president of the parent-teacher organization at the school.

The sixth annual Towles Elementary School Steaks and Stars Dinner and Silent Auction was held Friday. The event raised about $10,000 that the school will use for technology in the classroom, such as SMART Board interactive whiteboards, internet access and laptop computers.
