School Assembly: News from schools in Washoe County
Depoali Scholarship
A new scholarship is available for high school teachers specifically in the Washoe County School District.
The Kendyl Ruth Williams Depoali Scholarship Fund will award a one-time, $2,000 scholarship to high school teachers in the school district who are seeking advanced degrees.
The scholarship is named in honor of former educator Kendyl Depoali, who died in 2007.
During her 33-year career with the district, Depoali served as a principal, assistant principal, senior director of secondary education and superintendent of public policy.
Eligible candidates need to be currently employed as a full-time secondary teacher within the school district. They also need to have obtained a bachelor’s degree and must be pursuing advanced degrees from either the College of Liberal Arts or the College of Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Awards will be for the fall 2008 semester. The deadline for essays and applications is July 7. Application and essay instructions are available at the Community Foundation Web site: www.cfwnv.org. Details: Tracy Turner, Community Foundation Program Officer at 333-5499.

Half dollar
A local coin shop plans to give away a 200-year-old U.S. half dollar to a local child 12 or younger who answers correctly six questions related to the year 1808:
- Who was the president of the United States in 1808?
- Who won the presidential election that year?
- How many states were in the Union?
- Which well-known leader of the Confederate States of America was born?
- Who was the emperor of France?
- Which famous Austrian music composer premiered his Fifth Symphony?
The event is designed to introduce children to coin collecting and spark an interest in history.
Each child who answers all questions correctly will be part of a random drawing Aug. 5 to receive what numismatists call an 1808 “Capped Bust” half dollar minted in Philadelphia. It’s estimated value is $150. The deadline to enter is July 25, and one entry is allowed per person.
Entries can be mailed to or dropped off at Southgate Coins, 5032 S. Virginia St. Details: 322-4455 or mariesgate@sbcglobal.net.
