New faces at school: Melinda Jensen
This article is in a series of weekly looks at new school personnel in Washoe County.
Melinda Jensen has found her niche at Marvin Picollo School.
Jensen, 29, is a new teacher this fall at the south suburban Reno special education school.
“I love what I do,” she said. “This is definitely were I should be.”
Jensen works with students to focus on functional skills including vocational, recreational and domestic skills.
“It’s really exciting when a kid makes an improvement,” Jensen said. “(For example,) it was a great day when one of my kids walked into classroom and said ‘Hi! How are you?’”
Helping students become as independent as possible is the key, Jensen said.
“I’m pushing for them to gain independence in all the areas of the curriculum,” Jensen said.
