McQueen principal says a few improvements needed
The Washoe County School District community and business leaders voted to seek an increase in vehicle registration fees and sales tax to sell $393 million in bonds for school repairs and new technology. We look at some of the district’s campuses and their needs.
McQueen High School might not be the oldest campus in Washoe County, but making small repairs now could head off larger problems in the future, Principal John Carlson said.
One concern at the school are the cracked, worn-out stairs outside the building. He said staff and students are mindful to watch their step when walking up and down the steep, concrete steps.
Aside from the stairs, the school is in good condition, Carlson said.
“Most people that come to this school say it looks 10 to 15 years old, and that’s a tribute to the facility and students who have taken pride in maintaining a clean building,” Carlson said.
The school’s capacity is at 135 percent, which includes the additional space of McQueen’s 14 portable classes. Work rooms also were converted into small classrooms to help increase the space available.
The ethnic breakdown is as follows: 71.8 percent white; 12.3 percent Hispanic; 11 percent Asian; 3.1 percent black; 1.7 percent American Indian.
