Guns found near Billinghurst school

By Cyndi Loza

Billinghurst Middle School was locked down Monday morning after two guns were found near the school, school police Lt. Dale Richardson said.

A rifle and shotgun were found by a Billinghurst custodian about 11 a.m. near the school at 6685 Chesterfield Lane. Richardson said the school was placed under “code yellow,” restricting students to their classroom and requiring an escort to move about the building. But classes continued as normal, he said.

School police and Billinghurst staff searched the lockers and bathrooms and other parts of the campus but found no other weapons, school police Chief Mike Mieras said.

The alert ended at 1:30 p.m.

There’s a good possibility these weapons may have been taken in a residential burglary and stashed here in our location,” Richardson said.

Richardson said Reno police were notified. School district police kept the guns and will continue the investigation.
