Effort to fence in schools begins

By Cyndi Loza

A project to completely fence in seven Washoe County elementary schools began Friday with the announcement of a corporate donation.

Microsoft Licensing donated $2,850.50 to help launch Project Safeguard, a move toward installing protective fences around seven elementary schools: Jesse Beck Elementary School in southwest Reno; Elmcrest Elementary School and Verdi Elementary School, both in northwest Reno; Kate Smith Elementary School in north Reno; Smithridge Elementary School in southeast Reno; and Drake Elementary School and Bud Beasley Elementary School, both in Sparks.

Fences Welcomed

Beasley Elementary School will be the first school to be completely fenced.

I think it’s an extremely good idea,” said Kenna White, a sixth-grader at Beasley. “Now we know the people that we don’t want in the perimeter of our school won’t be there.”

Kristen Brown, the principal at Beck Elementary School, said she is anxious to get fencing installed at her school.

I think a safe and secure environment will give us the security to reach our education goals,” Brown said.
