Educators look for ways to involve parents

By Cyndi Loza

Sparks educators will explore new ways to include parents in K-12 education through a day long seminar Wednesday.

Faculty from Sparks High School, Sparks Middle School and Robert Mitchell Elementary will meet with experts from across the country to discuss ways to involve more parents in their schools.

If we can get a good solid parent involvement started at the elementary school level and then keep that going in middle school and high school, we’re excited to think it will ultimately continue to help to raise student achievement,” Sparks High Principal Doug Parry said.

Research has shown “the greater the parent involvement, the higher the student achievement and academic success,” Parry said.

Planning and funding for the event was provided by the University of Nevada, Reno College of Education, Education Collaborative of Washoe County, the Nevada State Parent Information and Resource Center and Sparks High School.
