Crowding may change school boundaries
The redistricting of nine Reno elementary schools to ease student crowding will be discussed at an Elementary Rezoning Committee meeting on Feb. 6.
The committee will meet at 6 p.m. at Billinghurst Middle School, 6685 Chesterfield Lane, to review current attendance boundaries of all elementary schools in the Washoe County School District.
“They want to hear from the people that live in these neighborhoods so that the committee ends up making the very best recommendation possible,” school district spokesman Steve Mulvenon said.
The northwest area of Reno is under review for redistricting. The elementary schools include Elmcrest, Melton, Peavine, Sierra Vista, Towles, Verdi, Warner, Westergard and Winnemucca.
This initiative is part of a districtwide proposal to help crowded schools accommodate 11,000 new students in the coming decade.
The seven-year plan will affect elementary through high schools in an effort to make the most of capacity at each campus by shifting students from crowded schools to those with more space.
“We have to do what we can to make sure that all of our existing facilities are used to their maximum capacity before we ask the taxpayers to fund new schools,” Mulvenon said.

Plans to redistrict elementary schools began in January 2005.
In the past, the committee has made recommendations to relocate 1,500 students to neighboring schools.
