Chávez essay contest under way
The fourth annual César Chávez essay contest asks students to answer if Congress should declare March 31 a national holiday to honor the activist leader.
The Washoe County School District has begun collecting essay submissions about Chávez, who would have been 81 on March 31.
“We like to promote César Chávez because its appropriate for all of our students to get to know this civil rights activist,” said Fátima Rivas, the school district’s Hispanic liaison specialist. “We feel his legacy is still relevant, and we want students to get to know his legacy.”
Local students will compete in three categories: elementary, middle and high school levels. The winner in each category will receive an Apple iPod.
Activities will conclude with a dinner at Circus Circus Reno at 6 p.m. on March 31.
The deadline to enter an essay is Monday. All entries must be received by noon on Monday and submitted by mail to Fátima Rivas, Hispanic Liaison Specialist, Student Support Services, Washoe County School District, P.O. Box 30425, Reno, NV 89520.
