Bowen, McLaury leading in District G school board race
Peggy Lear Bowen and Barbara L. McLaury were in the lead in a five-way contest Tuesday for two general spots in District G for the Washoe County school board.
Trailing were Fred Turnier, Leo Ramos and Gregory Loren Hudson.
Marilyn L. Rappaport’s name was on the ballot but was not campaigning. She missed the deadline for withdrawal.
“I’m feeling good,” said Bowen, a retired Washoe County educator and former state board of education member. “Politician in Greek means ‘to offer ones service’ and I appreciate the people are accepting my offer.”
District G includes western Washoe County from Cold Springs to Washoe Valley. The term is four years, and the pay is $750 a month. One-term trustee Barbara Price did not seek re-election.
Bowen said she wanted to be a voice for equal education for students across social and economic levels.
“We shouldn’t have to rely on the community to support the basic curriculum that we are required to provide as a school district,” Bowen said in an interview earlier this month.
As a retired educator, McLaury said she wants to help put policy deliberations into context from her 34 years of experience working in the school district.
“I’m very happy that the people of Washoe County have put their trust in me as well,” McLaury said.
Win or lose, Ramos said he celebrated the contest at his house on Tuesday evening.
“I’m disappointed, (but) I congratulate all the winners,” said Ramos, a partner in a company that buys and sells media properties.
