Board weighs group to fund
As Glen Ellyn officials work on balancing next year’s budget, local groups seeking funding pitched proposals to the Village Board at its workshop meeting Monday.
Organizations sought financial assistance from the village’s Special Programs Fund as the board continues to deliberate on its 2010-11 budget, which must be passed before the start of the fiscal year May 1.
The groups at the meeting were: Glen Ellyn Youth and Family Counseling Service, Glen Ellyn 4th of July Committee, Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center, Glen Ellyn Historical Society, Glen Ellyn Historic Preservation Commission, Downtown Glen Ellyn Alliance, Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, DuPage Senior Citizens Council, Glen Ellyn Economic Development Corporation, Glen Ellyn Environmental Commission, Anima and DuPage Senior Citizens Council.
“They represent a great fabric of the community,” Village President Mark Pfefferman said. “It is very difficult to weigh the importance of them, and we just have limited funds and (we) have to decide which, if any, of these organizations get that money.”
Among the requests, the Downtown Glen Ellyn Alliance asked the board for $20,000 to support special events in the village’s central business district throughout the year. The group’s current funding ends in May.
Carol White, organizer of special events for the Alliance, said the group is a good investment as its efforts generate revenue for the village.
“Our downtown organization is responsible for throwing events to generate foot traffic,” White said. “We try to take it one step further and that is to not only get people inside of our stores, but hopefully create an environment where they are comfortable spending money and buying and seeing what’s out there.”
A public hearing to determine funding will be held at an April 12 board meeting at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St.
“We all need to work together to find out what the best way to proceed is,” Finance Director Jon Batek said.
